Nikola is a company trying to change the world by revolutionizing the transportation and energy industries through the manufacturing and sale of zero-emission heavy-duty trucks and the deployment of production and fueling infrastructure needed to support them.

We’re on the lookout for a Functional Safety Engineer who will support the execution of safety-related activities to complete the safety cases for Nikola's in-house control units in our groundbreaking Tre BEV and FCEV. In this key role, you will play an important part in the definition and use of the entire functional safety lifecycle, gaining experience and domain knowledge in state-of-the-art embedded systems in the automotive domain.

We’re looking for the engineer that can build an image of the complete system in their mind down to the microarchitecture of the SoC. Someone who understands the interactions of hardware and software elements at all levels of the stack and has excellent fundamentals in Functional Safety. An ideal engineer can talk through the distinctions in the ISO 26262 standard from normative and informative clauses, identify opportunities for tailoring and rationalizing requirements, and maintain a focus on practical reduction of risk.

You will:
  • Ramp up quickly on our controller designs and assumed vehicle-level concepts
  • Bring your familiarity and practical experience with ISO 26262 in the safety development lifecycle
  • Work with architects to tailor concepts to meet the requirements of the Tre FCEV and Tre BEV
  • Apply your knowledge of automotive best-practices for system-level and component-level safety mechanisms
  • Work with supplier contacts to analyze safety capabilities and safety-related functionalities
  • Lead system-level, software-level, and hardware-level safety analyses (FMEDA, FTA, FFIA, DFA, FMEA)
  • Define requirements and verification plans for safety-related features
  • Support the integration of qualifiable pre-existing components and tools
You Have:
  • A growth mindset that actively explores new technologies
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related field, MS in Computer Engineering or Computer Science preferred
  • 4 years of experience of safety activities for safety-related embedded products or a related Master's degree
  • Ability to comprehend new systems quickly and identify points where faults can escalate to failures
Differentiators:
  • Certification as a Functional Safety Engineer
  • Practical experience in inductive and deductive failure analysis methodologies
  • Experience with EARS requirement syntax, requirements database tools, requirement baseline management, and hierarchical requirement structures
  • Experience with SysML or other modelling based system engineering methods
  • Expertise in embedded system architecture and automotive tools & technologies
