Project Controls Manager, Hydrogen Production Plant

Nikola Corporation in partnership with Wabash Valley Resources will contribute to the national energy transition by deploying a large-scale hydrogen production and carbon capture sequestration project in West Terre Haute, Indiana.  With existing assets, application of proven technologies, and partnerships with industry leaders, Nikola and Wabash Valley Resources will be first-to-market with clean, dispatchable, and reliable hydrogen production at prices competitive with traditional production methods.

The Wabash Valley Resources project will redevelop the Wabash River IGCC plant, located in West Terre Haute, IN into a 14,000 kg/hr hydrogen production facility. The project will capture carbon dioxide that is normally emitted from the hydrogen purification process and permanently store it deep underground in formations of the Illinois Basin.   The redeveloped site will utilize solid feedstock blended with biomass fuels to achieve a net-zero carbon intensity hydrogen product.

Nikola is now looking for an experienced Project Controls Manager, responsible for the management, oversight, and coordination of all new project related activities for the Wabash Project in West Terre Haute, IN.  This role is responsible for ensuring project planning, scheduling, progress, estimating, insurance compliance, risk mitigation, and staying within budget while keeping a high focus on delivering a quality result.  This position reports to the Project Director.

The Project Controls Manager shall work in a safe manner that promotes goals of the Company by supporting site EHS activities through compliance with all environmental, health and safety policies/procedures, and through active participation in EHS programs and initiatives.

In this key role, you will work closely with the Company’s Project Management Team through the pre-construction process by collaborating in the development of invitation documents, proposals, budgets, estimates, and schedules.  You will commence early activities to serve the needs for project planning, scheduling, and insurance compliance prior to full contractor mobilization.  During construction and near completion, you’ll work closely with the project management team, crew leaders, superintendents, and engineering professionals for the construction, commissioning, and startup of operations of the new facilities.


  • Minimum 15 years of project controls experience, the last ten years in a Construction position.
  • Demonstrated success in projects including process plants, such as syngas, ammonia, refinery, petrochemical, LNG, chemicals, etc.
  • Able to demonstrate experience and knowledge of working in a union environment in the USA.
  • Experience with module logistics will be valued, as well.
  • A broad understanding of fundamental Project Construction principles and Risk Management.
  • Possess good general knowledge of PC software applications, including Scheduling software, Word, Excel, and Outlook and able to utilize electronic document management and maintenance management software.

At full construction mobilization, the Project Controls Manager will relocate to the site in West Terre Haute, IN and maintain residence through substantial completion and closeout of the project work.  This position will require occasional travel to Nikola HQ in Phoenix, AZ and the Engineering Contractor’s office during Detail Engineering.

The goals of the Wabash Valley Resources LLC (WVR) project are as follows:

  • WVR will redevelop the idle Wabash River Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) facility to produce low-cost hydrogen to be utilized in power generation, chemical synthesis, and mobility markets.
  • WVR will produce hydrogen with the lowest carbon intensity of any large-scale production facility in the United States, through the innovative deployment of carbon capture and sequestration (CCS).
  • Wabash Valley Resources will minimize the local community impact of operations and ensure the safe and reliable supply of hydrogen.
