Description

The Safety Compliance and Regulatory Engineer works with various product development groups to ensure that all vehicles produced by Nikola Motor, comply with the applicable government regulations and Nikola Motor design requirements, and will have all the necessary supporting documentation. The Safety Compliance and Regulatory Engineer also maintains government regulatory requirements, documentation, information, guidance, and interpretations that apply to the vehicles manufactured by Nikola Corporation.

The Safety Compliance and Regulatory Engineer will have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the applicable vehicle regulations and Nikola Motor design requirements. This position will interface with Core Engineering, Program Managers and team members, Vehicle Engineering Managers, and Product Platform personnel to make sure they have the necessary information to plan, design, and produce vehicles that are in compliant with the applicable regulations.

The Safety Compliance and Regulatory Engineer performs his, or her, duties with minimal direct supervision and understands the process and procedure that Nikola Motor follows to develop and validate vehicle compliance. Communicates with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and other non-governmental organizations (e.g., Industry Technical Working Groups, Global Automakers, Auto Alliance, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), etc.) regarding vehicle compliance and/or testing issues when relevant to Nikola products.

This position will represent the Safety department at Nikola Motor and Industry meetings with the direction and guidance of the Safety Compliance and Regulatory Manager and Head of Safety Compliance and Certification.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Understand the applicable vehicle regulations including high voltage and charging systems (FMVSS, UN regulations and Global Technical Regulations (GTRs)) and Nikola Design Requirements
  • Interface with the Program Team to ensure regulatory compliance impacts are identified, addressed, and documented per Nikola Motor development process
  • Monitor Industry Change Control Board (CCB) and Releases for impact to regulatory compliance and work with the appropriate Engineering Group to validate and document compliance
  • Read, interpret, summarize, monitor and track new or pending regulations and communicate to the appropriate people
  • Maintain Regulatory Library with current and pertinent information in a user-friendly format so anyone at Nikola Motor has easy access and the most up to date information
  • Investigate and respond to questions related to regulations and compliance
  • Investigate and propose a direction and action regarding potential issues of noncompliance
  • Develop and maintain current product Compliance Charts and documentation
  • Provide regulatory guidance and interpretations upon review with the Department Manager or Senior Regulatory Compliance Engineer
  • Interface with Truck and Engine Manufacturers Association (EMA), Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers Association (CVMA), Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and other associations under the guidance of the Department Head
  • Act as the communication & interpretation “window” for 3rd party (e.g. NHTSA, IIHS, etc.) vehicle certification and/or testing communications
  • Submit required reports to NHTSA by specified due dates to support compliance and/or test activities
  • Coordinate with Nikola Motor engineering to investigate unexpected test issues and makes Nikola Motor’s Case to NHTSA to prevent further consequences
  • Meet periodically with Nikola Motor Engineering and Certification Groups to explain new and/or existing compliance requirements and timing
  • Keep Head of Vehicle Safety apprised of new compliance issues and industry trends
  • Assist Nikola Motor Engineering with both "trial" and "official" 3rd party testing, to include NHTSA NCAP and NHTSA OVSC (compliance) when applicable

Additional Responsibilities

  • Participate in joint industry/government activities
  • Responds to Customer Retailer Services questions relating to safety-related certification and/or testing issues
  • Investigate governmental compliance concerns/inquiries with Nikola Motor, drafts response documents, presents Nikola’s case to government, and expedites the resolution of pending governmental action

Basic Requirements:

  • Engineering mindset along with the ability to quickly understand and communicate technical information between Nikola Motor engineering and 3rd party test organizations to support compliance and/or test activities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, and time management skills
  • Must be able to coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Some travel might be required

Experience/Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology (Electrical Engineering Degree preferred)
  • At least 6 years of experience in product design/development
  • At least 2 years leading others in engineer/design activities

OR

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology (Electrical Engineering Degree preferred)
  • At least 4 years of experience in product design/development
  • At least 2 years leading others in engineer/design activities

Candidates must have current U.S. work authorization or be TN eligible from Mexico or Canada.  This position is not eligible for CPT or OPT.
