Description

We are seeking a Senior eAxle System Engineer who is responsible for development of the gear shifting and operation mode switching of an electric driveline system consisting of inverters, electric motors and a multi-
ratio geartrain. You will work closely with the inverter, electric motor, gearbox, powertrain controls and thermal engineers within the Nikola Powertrain Engineering. In this role you will lead the following activities:
  • Development (design and validation) of the analytical modeling, hardware, control logics/software and calibration of the gear shifting and operation mode switching mechanisms comprising of clutches/synchronizers, actuators and sensors on both bench and vehicle levels
  • Creation and execution of APQP of the gear shifting and operation mode switching mechanisms including the program planning, DFMEA and DVP&R
  • Definition and requirements of interfaces and compatibility between the gear shifting and operation mode switching mechanisms and neighboring components and subsystems inside and outside of the electric driveline system
  • Support the development of the electric driveline subsystem and vehicle integration
You will:
  • Collaborate with Nikola cross-functional teams, suppliers, manufacturing, testing, and validation teams on the complete life cycle of the gear shifting and operation mode switching mechanisms through product launch, and implementation of lessons learned on subsequent products (cradle-to-cradle responsibility)
  • Lead definition of appropriate engineering targets to meet functionality, quality/performance, and attribute requirements of the vehicle program
  • Develop and maintain the Design Failure Mode and Effects and Analysis (DFMEA) including the boundary and system/P diagrams
  • Develop and maintain the Design Validation Plan and Report (DVP&R) including both in-house and supplier validation test plans, and ensure sign-off tests are completed on schedule
  • Develop and maintain the gear shifting and operation mode switching Technical Specifications incorporating company/industry/regulatory standards, test procedures and material specifications
  • Lead in troubleshooting and resolution all development and production issues
  • Support the purchasing team in sourcing and RFQ activities
  • Support vehicle launch and pre-production builds (both virtual and physical)
You Have:
  • BSME or related degree (MSME Preferred)
  • 5+ Years of experience with gear shifting or mode switching mechanisms of automotive multi-ratio, multi-prime mover transmission/axle development
  • Experience in electrified transmission/axle is very much preferred
  • Good communications skills and a team player
  • A strong knowledge of the first-principle physics in mechatronics, clutches, actuators, geartrain, control logics, electric motors and power electronics
  • Working knowledge of GD&T, APQP, VAVE and problem resolution (8D/5D, Ishikawa/fishbone diagrams, change management, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of CAD (CATIA V5/V6 preferred)

Candidates must have current U.S. work authorization or be TN eligible from Mexico or Canada. This position is not eligible for CPT or OPT.
