Description

We are seeking an eDriveline Staff Engineer that will be responsible for FCEV EAxle performance and integration in coordination with FCEV teams including Fuel Cell, HV Battery, Power Electronics and Thermal Systems to execute vehicle level FC powertrain system design, implementation, and validation; you will work closely with Nikola's Powertrain Engineering teams to implement controls logics for powertrain system to meet target vehicle use-cases. In this role you will lead analysis, design, validation, and release of one or more of the following teams:

  • Gear train/transmission specification and design (number of gears, gear ratios, packaging)
  • E-machine (motor) integration (cooling, lubrication, electrical)
  • Durability/lifetime (gear design, bearing design, lubrication, shift mechanism design)
  • Structural (Gearbox mounting, isolation, vehicle/suspension loads, material selection)
  • Seals (shaft seals, gearbox case seals/gaskets, venting)

You Will:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, suppliers, manufacturing, testing, and validation teams on the complete life cycle of the project through product launch, and implementation of lessons learned on subsequent products (cradle-to-cradle responsibility)
  • Apply fundamental physics to lead the progression of design maturity from initial concept to product launch, to next concept
  • Generate and review 2D, 3D, and analytical models
  • Lead definition of appropriate system-level engineering targets to meet function, quality and attribute requirements of the Vehicle Program
  • Lead development and validation of Vehicle/System Design Specifications incorporating company/industry/regulatory standards, test procedures and material specifications
  • Ensure system meets targets
  • Lead resolution of design, attribute or packaging incompatibilities through deep collaboration with cross-functional teams
  • Develop and maintain the Design Validation Plan and Report (DVP&R) including both in-house and supplier testing plans, and ensure sign-off tests are completed on schedule
  • Troubleshoot and resolve all validation issues
  • Support the Purchasing team in sourcing and RFQ activities
  • Support vehicle launch and pre-production builds (both virtual and physical)

You Have:

  • BSME, BSMET, BS Automotive Engineering or related degree (MSME Preferred)
  • 10+ Years of experience with Heavy duty trucks powertrain development
  • Excellent communications skills demonstrated ability to communicate at all levels
  • A strong knowledge of the first-principle physics behind vehicle dynamic performance for heavy duty trucks for electric propulsion systems (fuel Cell, battery and motor & inverter)
  • Proven experience in the development of gear trains/transmissions and housings.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T, FMEA, DVP&R, DFSS, DFA, DFM, APQP, VAVE and problem resolution (8D, Ishikawa diagrams, etc.)
  • Engineering knowledge of defined requirements and validation of component(s) / system(s) design, function, performance, production & manufacturing requirements, testing, and validation
  • Experience using CFD and FEA simulation tools along with CAD (CATIA V5/V6 preferred)
  • Solid understanding of system/component design/development processes
  • Proven experience transitioning a vehicle platform from prototype to production readiness.

Candidates must have current U.S. work authorization or be TN eligible from Mexico or Canada. This position is not eligible for CPT or OPT.
