Supplier Quality Engineer: Hydrogen Fuel Cell and BEV Systems Components

We’re currently seeking a Supplier Quality Engineer with experience with technologies and components applied to Hydrogen Fuel Cell and Battery Electric Vehicle (FCEVs & BEVs) key components primarily in the propulsion and energy storage sub-systems. Experience with high (800V) and low (24V) voltage components and systems for electric vehicles is an important asset. Experience with 700 bar hydrogen (or other compressed gas) storage systems technologies (pressure vessels, valves, tubing & controls) as well as with Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell systems and associated components (valves, fans, pumps, heaters, heat exchangers, filters, sensors, tubing) will also be very useful.

These categories of components represents both some existing technology products (some valves and sensors), as well as newly developed devices and parts, and the interconnecting components (plastic, elastomeric, and metallic tubing, hose, ducting, and connective parts) for the various fluid handling systems which have stringent cleanliness requirements as a key characteristic quality requirement.

The role supports development through series production implementation of FCEV and BEV vehicle systems on an aggressive timeline. In this role you will interact with multiple departments and suppliers and be responsible for assuring the highest quality standards for purchased products.

The right candidate will have experience managing global suppliers and can direct supplier activities at the management level, with the capacity to contribute consistently and positively in a high-paced, fast-changing and sometimes unpredictable environment.

In this role, you will:

  • Support purchasing in the supplier selection by conducting onsite supplier visits, and onsite or remotely managed supplier audits, and participating in supplier technical reviews.
  • Perform supplier process audits and site inspections. Develop process improvement plans and drive implementation. Monitor and maintain performance metrics
  • Investigate supplier quality issues to determine root cause, conduct incoming parts inspections as needed and identify and implement corrective actions.
  • Develop, manage and improve the APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning) process with suppliers from initial design stage through PPAP submission and start of mass production
  • Manage total ownership of supplier quality through the entire life cycle, from initial sourcing through development, tooling, and series production implementation phases as well as product launch and ongoing business management for assigned purchased components.
  • Guide Engineering development to ensure manufacturing process needs are considered in the design phase and that proper quality expectations are defined for assigned purchased components.
  • Develop quality plans, design test methods and gages, identify potential failure modes and process weaknesses and drive corrective actions.
  • Travel 50% on average, occasionally on short notice

For Consideration, you’ll need:

  • S. in Engineering.
  • 3+ years of experience in an Automotive or high-volume manufacturing business.
  • Strong written and verbal skills as well as organizational and program management capabilities.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics and drawings and an in-depth knowledge of quality standards and specifications in area of placement.
  • Excellent analytical abilities, technical writing ability and comprehensive understanding of quality toolbox (SPC, 8D root cause analysis, tolerancing, control and inspection standards, etc.)
  • Certification preferred – American Society for Quality, Black Belt, Six Sigma, etc.
  • Open-minded self-starter with the ability to adapt, improvise and problem solve, as well manage multiple tasks and projects and concisely explain complex issues supported with data.
  • Team player with strong interpersonal skills.
